online modules

laws of the game

The FA’s digital ‘Guide to the Laws of the Game’ modules are accessible to grassroots football referees as they move towards the eventual completion of their full face-to-face course.

The online facility also acts as a useful refresher for existing referees. It's facilitating the improvement of individuals and their understanding of the laws of football, especially for new officials, as well as highlighting how they should be applied. Variations for youth football are included, and there are questions at the end of each module, all of which must be answered correctly to successfully complete the learning.

new referee development officer

introducing... michael!

Michael Wallace is our new Referee Development Officer, joining Lukas Wood in our Referees Team. Before joining the Essex County FA, his work background was in education, working with young adults aged 11-18. Michael has been involved in local football coaching for 15 years, and refereeing for five years.

You will often find him running the line at Step Five level in the men’s game or officiating in the FA Women’s National League. Some of the key focus areas Michael will oversee are FA Referee Courses, youth-to-adult transition and working with our younger referees and county referees to help them develop in the game. We have a number of exciting CPD (Continuing Professional Development) sessions arranged... so watch this space! If you need any help or support, whether you are just starting as a referee, or if you've been officiating for a number of years, get in touch!

well done, graham and matt!

grassroots awards

Essex football volunteers who’ve contributed their time and energy for the benefit of parents, coaches, clubs, leagues, fellow volunteers, match officials and more have been recognised with 2024 Grassroots Football Awards for Essex.

The awesome local volunteers who’ve give so much, week in, week out, rain or shine, have been appreciated through this year’s awards, which say thank you to all the people and organisations who give their time to make the game happen. Well done to Graham Austin, who won the 'Match Official' category, while Matt Jarvis was highly commended.
