Grassroots Football to Take Part in Silent Support Weekend

Promoting Respect in Youth Football Across Essex

Silent Support Weekend is returning on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th March, and youth leagues in Essex have joined the grassroots community by signing-up to show their backing for the promotion of respect in youth football across England.

Once again, England Football and the Essex County FA are asking spectators to dial down the noise from the sidelines and dial up the positivity, cutting out the confusing and distracting shouting from the side of the pitch. Instead, they’re requesting respect for all players by helping them to find their voices, make their own choices and enjoy their game.

During Silent Support Weekend, applause from spectators for good play - and quiet encouragement from coaches - is welcome. Everything else can have the weekend off. This will reduce pressure and confusion and give players a better opportunity to develop their game. All spectators have to do is not talk, but they can still applaud good play from both teams.

Essex County FA Safeguarding Manager, Helen Hever, commented: “Too often, there are too many voices from the touchline, too many opinions, and too much unnecessary distraction. We want as many people as possible to play an important part and the aim is simple: to raise awareness of the need to create a positive and pressure-free environment in which children can enjoy football and learn to love and develop their game.”

Silent support is positive support. Find out more about the campaign and access coaching ideas below. You can also follow us on social media.
