Referee Pitch Inspection Guidance

Pitch Inspection Guidance Reminder for Essex Referees

Remembering the Overriding Factor of Player Safety

As we’re in the time of year in which temperatures are low, seeing the likelihood of fog, plus rainfall is higher, our Referees Team have reminded all match officials of the importance of a thorough pitch inspection.

It is vital, from the referee’s point of view, that, when asked to undertake a pitch inspection, they do so professionally, remembering the overriding factor of player safety. As highlighted here, consideration needs to be given to:

* if the playing surface is safe to plan on (i.e. is it frozen?)
* whether or not the weather conditions may worsen
* the view of the grounds person, including local knowledge of the drainage
* the existing state of the playing surface

All areas of the pitch should be inspected, and a ball should be used to determine whether the surface is playable, for movement and bounce purposes. Remember: the decision as to whether the match is played is the referee’s.
